Yes, we need to know which sleeping positions are good for our health as it is a part of our life. Everyone sleeps every day for some hours but the duration may differ from person to person. 5 to 6 hours sleep is enough for some people, however, it is not enough for others. They need at least 8 hours of sleep to become refreshed. I daily sleep around 12 am midnight and wake up at 6 or 7 am and sometimes earlier or later. So when you sleep 5 to 6 hours, you must think about the sleeping positions that you need to maintain for your better health. But people normally avoid thinking about it.
Why we need to correct our sleeping positions?
It is very important to select right sleeping positions as we spend several hours for sleep in a single direction every day that may cause spinal disease if the direction is bad. The spinal problems that are caused by bad sleeping posture can be reduced by choosing correct sleeping positions. I don’t know whether it is possible because while sleeping we don’t remember in which position we are sleeping. Before sleeping it is possible to sleep in correct position but once you go into sleeping mode you forget everything.
What are the bad sleeping positions that we need to avoid?
There may be several spinal problems but some of them caused by the following bad sleeping positions:
Sleeping on your stomach
If you sleep in this position for a long time, your spine may be changed to curved form. It mainly affects the meeting point of the neck and spine. The symptoms can be reduced with certain adjustments but better if you change your sleeping habits.
The fetal position in mother's womb
This is a natural position and most babies are found in this posture while staying in their mother’s womb. Sleeping in this position may cause a lot of strain on the lower spine. So, one should avoid this sleeping position for a longer time.
Sleeping On your side
Sleeping on your side is better sleeping position than other two. Nevertheless it may disturb blood circulation system and the organs that lie on the side you were sleeping on may have a lot of pressure created by your sleeping posture.
We have seen that every sleeping position has some disadvantages but these can be reduced if you make some changes in your sleeping habits.
Some of the habits that you can change to save your spine are:
- Keep a pillow between your knees while sleeping. It not only will lessen stress on the spine, but also make your hips straight.
- If you are sleeping on you back, you should keep a pillow under your knees to make your body alignment straight. But the people having sleep apnea should avoid this position.
- You should deliberately change your sleeping position all over the day so that your spine remains healthy. One shouldn’t sleep in a single position over a long period of time.
