Kidney stone is a painful condition that develops within the kidney or the urinary tract due to deposits of different types of substances. There may be two conditions that develop kidney stones – decrease in urine volume and increase in materials in the urine that normally cause kidney stones. But the primary risk factor of kidney stone is dehydration. Drinking low amount of water causes dehydration. I always drink enough water to balance fluid level in my body. The risk of dehydration increases in the hot day when you avoid drinking the amounts of water that your body needs to be hydrated.

When the amount of stone forming materials like calcium, oxalate and uric acid increases in the urine and the fluid is unable to dilute them completely, it leads to kidney stone. Crystals generally sticks together and form stones, but it can be prevented if you have the substances in your urine that prevent their bonding. Lack of those materials in your urine can increase the risk of kidney stones formation.

Numerous factors that can influence the balance of the urine in your body are:

1. Lack of water

Your urine has several things like the salts, minerals and other substances that can form kidney stone by sticking together when you stop drinking enough water to dilute them.

2. Several health problems in your body can help in build up kidney stones as they influence the volume of the urine. These health conditions may include gout or certain IBD cases.

3. Kidney stones can be genetic and affect your next generations too.

4. Sometimes the parathyroid glands produce hormones more than its normal range, which enhance the level of calcium in the body. Increased amounts of calcium can help kidney stone formation. However this occurrence is found very rare.

Our body may have different types of kidney stones:

1. Calcium stones

Increasing in calcium level in your urine can lead to calcium stones. The amount of calcium enhances when your body have several health problems like genetic conditions that come from ancestors and spread over many generations, excessive production of hormones by the parathyroid gland, Kidney problems, and several types of cancers or sarcoidosis.

2. Struvite stones

These types of stones generally develop in women after an occurrence of a urinary tract infection. The risk of struvite stones increases due to bacterial infection. Proteus, Pseudomonas, Klebsiella, Staphylococcus and Mycoplasma are the organisms that cause bacterial infection in the urinary tract.

3. Stones caused by uric acid

When you eat protein rich diet or suffer from gout, the risk of uric acid stones increases because these things enhance the uric acid level in your urine. A genetic condition may also have impact on your uric acid level in the urine. It is very common in most of health conditions.

4. Cystine stones

Though cystine stones are not often in the body, it can be formed due to genetic conditions. That means if your ancestors have suffered from this condition, the risk of developing cystine stones in your body is higher.

So if you are experiencing any kind of pain while urinating, you must consult your doctor to know whether it is kidney stone. And last, but not the least, drink fresh and sufficient water to avoid dehydration that causes kidney stones formation.
