Today I will take you to Lamayuru, often known as ‘moonland of Ladakh. Lamayuru is a tiny village, but perfect place for rest. During the journey from Kargil to Leh, people stay in Lamayuru for a while so that their body can regain energy. There are several old monasteries in Ladakh and one of them exists in Lamayuru. According to legends, Lamayuru was a lake before. The village was built when the lake dried up. It has several things to explore.
Lamayuru is famous for its oldest and largest monastery in Ladakh. Travelers don’t forget to visit this attractive place. Consisting of several stories, Lamayuru monastery was laid by Mahasiddhacharya Naropa in 11th century. His prayers were supposed to be the main reason that helped the place dried up.
However the monastery of five buildings now has only the central building, it is still famous place for photographers and inquisitive travelers.
Two famous annual festivals are celebrated in this region – Yuru Kab Gyat and Hemis Tse Chu. I am not able to understand what kind of these festivals are and what they do during this period. Both festivals are celebrated in different month of the Tibetan lunar calendar.
If you want to visit Lamayuru, you can take a cab from Leh. In summer season, you can travel by bus, but the problem is that it may take much longer time to reach there. However traveling by bus may have fun and adventure.
