Today I will show you the morning view of Kolkata city. It was Sunday. My younger brother had to get on the train with his family at Howrah station. I was going to drop him to the station. We hired an Ola car to reach the station as soon as possible because the train was to depart at 10:40 am. I was sitting in the front seat of the car.
Being in the front seat I got a wonderful opportunity to capture the morning view of the city. My hand was shaking while capturing photographs.
Central Kolkata has several large playgrounds where people come to play and jog in the morning. As you know, Sunday is a holiday. A huge amount of people gather in the playgrounds on the weekend and spend time. some people spend time by playing various sports like cricket, football, badminton, etc.
Even on holidays, a huge number of vehicles run on the city road. According to statista.com, in 2020, over 1.9 million vehicles were registered in the city of Kolkata.
This is Howrah Bridge. It connects Kolkata city with Howrah. The bridge was commissioned in 1943. At present time, the name of this bridge is Rabindra Setu which was originally named the new Howrah Bridge before. The bridge was renamed on 14 June 1965. Rabindra Setu was renamed after Rabindranath Tagore who was the great Bengali poet. However, people still call it as Howrah Bridge.
People can also walk on Howrah Bridge. Pedestrian walkways have been made on both sides of the road. Last Sunday I also walked on Howrah Bridge and captured some wonderful photographs that I shared here. The bridge is actually made over Hooghly River in West Bengal.
It was my first walk on Howrah Bridge. Prior to this I always crossed the bridge by bus or car. According to a wikipedia article, more than 1,50,000 pedestrians and around 1,00,000 vehicles move on Howrah Bridge daily.
This is Hooghly River. It is also known as Bhagirathi-Hooghly or Ganga or Kati-Ganga. According to Encyclopedia Britannica, Hooghly River is known as a branch of Gangas. That’s why people bring the holy water from the Hooghly River to their homes. They use the water to worship their god.
Other than the bridge, people can cross the Hooghly River by boat steamer. I have boarded the boat steamer once in my childhood. We went to visit the Botanical Garden where trees from different countries were planted.
There is a big market of garland beside the Howrah Bridge. The market is clearly visible from over there. People from different areas of the city come and purchase garland from there and sell them in their locality.
This is Howrah Railway Station located in Howrah city. It is the largest railway junction in India which has around 23 platforms as per the wikipedia article. Approximately 600 passenger trains arrive and depart from there. In February, I am also going to board the train because I will have to attend my cousin sister’s marriage. I am a little bit excited. After a long time, I will visit my village.
