A new protein called cadherin-22 discovered by scientists is the main cause of the spreading of cancer cells in the body. If scientists find any solution that could obstruct the production of cadherin-22, which actually generates in low oxygen area, it would help decrease the risk of cancer cells invasion. This research was conducted at University of Guelph, Ontario in which researchers discovered cadherin-22 which is capable to accumulate all cancer cells and increase the invasion rate. Up to 90 percent body cells destruction can be prevented, if the production of cadherin-22 is blocked completely.
You will get the result of the research in the journal Oncogene. It explained about hypoxia, a condition which reduces the supply of oxygen to the body tissue. Low oxygen area actually causes the production of cadherin-22 which increases the progress of cancer cells, adhesion and metastasis.
"Cadherin-22 could be a powerful prognostic marker for advanced cancer stages and patient outcomes," said lead author Jim Uniacke, a professor at the varsity.
"If you can find a treatment or a drug that can block cadherin-22, you could potentially prevent cancer cells from moving, invading and metastasizing."
