Houseboat is popular in two cities of India - Srinagar and Alleppey in Kerala which is called Venice of India. In Srinagar houseboat stay on the edge while it roams in the sea water in Alleppey.
The houseboat was constructed by British in Jammu and Kashmir. When Raja Gulab Singh was King of Jammu and Kashmir, British sought the place from the king to build home so that they could live there, but Raja Gulab Singh refused to provide any place. However, they were restricted to build home on land, but not on water. Taking advantage of this, British built the houseboat and started living in it. After British, Kashmiris took it under their control.
Houseboat contains 3 to 4 rooms including a drawing room and a deck to have a close view of lake. Its wall and ceiling are made of wood that have very good carvings made on it. But at present, they have to spend around 80 lakh to 1 crore to build a houseboat just because of wood’s increasing value. According to merchants, it is no longer a profitable business.
